Description
WING LEADER
Wing Commander James Edgar ‘Johnny’ Johnson leads his Canadian Wing from his personal Spitfire Mk 1X JE – J during a combat sortie over Normany covering the allied advance form the landing beaches. An exceptional fighter pilot and Wing leader he had flown fighter sweeps over German occupied territory almost ceaselessly from 1941 to 1944, involved in heavy air fighting throughout this period. His successful leadership of the all – Canadian 127 and 144 Spitfire wings from forward airstrips in Normandy, marked him out as one of the RAFs most effective Wing Commanders.
He was credited with 34 combat victories – all of them German fighters including over 20 FW190s making him the RAFs highest scoring ace of the war.
Johnson retired from RAF service in 1966 with the rank of Air Vice Marshal CB. CBE. DSO and Two Bars, DFC and Bar.
He died in 2001.
